What follows is a basic outline of the Hung Leng Kuen
grading syllabus as of June 2004.
A full syllabus is available when you commit to training.
(All students begin at White Sash level.)

First Grade - White/Yellow Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Kwoon Etiquette
- Punching combination
- Footwork set Ma Sing
- Free sparring with straight-line punches, parries and centre guard
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Effective punching
- Practice of parrying and punching
- Particular attention to correct stances
- Students should be familiar with practical defences against a variety of common scenarios

Second Grade - Yellow/Orange Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Punching from Chin Fu Ma
- Stepping and Punching combinations
- Shaolin Chang Chuan (Shaolin LongFist) (part 1)
- Sparring - Hands only using all combinations
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Practice of Kicks and Choy Gar in a sparring situation
- Stretching frequently
- Timing and different rhythms of movement during form work

Third Grade - Orange/Green Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Kicking Set
- Kicking combinations
- Shaolin Chang Chuan (Shaolin LongFist) (part 2)
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Correct thrust and snap of kicks during set and formwork
- Familiarity with the uses of kicks in sparring and self-defence situations
- Combining of hand and foot blows - being able to mix, match and flow

Fourth Grade - Green/Blue Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Striking Set
- Rolls and Break-fall Set
- Trips and Throws
- Shaolin Chang Chuan (Shaolin LongFist) (part 3 and as a whole)

Fifth Grade - Blue/Purple Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Deceptive Hands
- Blocking Set
- Self-Defence (set situations)
- Tong Long Fong Guan (Mantis and Phoenix Eye Fist)
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Working to develop all previous grades as well as this one. You are now heading into Intermediate levels

Sixth Grade - Purple/First Brown Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Mungum Sao (Sensitive Hand and Trapping Combination Set)
- Thunder and Lightning Fist Set
- Sern Ying Kuen (Mixed Style Fist)
- Advanced hand strikes
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Gain instructor experience through assisting

Seventh Grade - First/Second Brown Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Stretching Set
- Ba Gwa Chang (Eight Triagrams Palm)
- Flexible Weapon Ba Gwa
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Develop flexibility and work on your weak areas
- Attention to breathing, relaxation and focus of chi
- Instructing beginners in basic material

Eighth Grade - Second/Third Brown Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Tan Tien Breathing Set
- Chi Kung Set
- Tai Chi Pushing Hands
- Yang Tai Chi Chuan Form
- Chinese Sabre Sword Form
Students should display suitable ability/awareness in the following areas:
- Development of Fa Jing
- Total focus
- Teaching classes where appropriate

Ninth Grade - Third Brown/First Black Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Hut Pao Chi Kung Set
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 1)
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 2)
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 3)
- Double Ended Spear Form
- Teaching traditional and self-defence classes
- Free sparring, all grades
1st Black is about honing all the previous grades, so that you have the raw materials ready to begin
the true learning of how to develop yourself as a martial artist and as an individual. |
Tenth Grade - First/Second Black Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Lesson Planning
- Fitness and Chinese Boxing class
- Traditional class including relaxation techniques
- Self defence class
- Seminar of own choice i.e. Doorman, self-defence, weapons etc.
- First Aid (a First Aider certificate is needed)
- Advanced (Aerial) Kicking
- Drunken Boxing Form
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 4)
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 5)
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (part 6)

Eleventh Grade - Second/Third Black Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Ba Yeng Kuen Hut Pao Tsut (8 Form Fist of the Black Leopard System)
- Other Forms or Syllabus chosen at the discretion of the Chief Instructor

Twelfth Grade - Third/Fourth Black Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Other Forms or Syllabus chosen at the discretion of the Chief Instructor

Thirteenth Grade - Fourth/Fifth Black Sash
Grading Requirements:
- Other Forms or Syllabus chosen at the discretion of the Chief Instructor
