Self Defence

Hung Leng Kuen teaches practical, no-nonsense Self-Defence which can be applied by women and men; young and mature; strong and the not-yet-strong; fit or prepared-to-become-fit. Basically, that is suitable for all.

We cover all ranges of open-hand combat and self defence, using aerial & long range kicks, short range kicks, parries, "blocks", hand strikes, trapping, locks, throws and grappling.

Instructors plan lessons to take students through each of these skills with logical progression. Therefore, students who attend on a regular basis will build on strengths and develop weaker areas to become confident and able in all instances of Self-Defence, whether at a distance, in close range or on the floor.

Sparring is regularly employed to ensure students are able to apply what they have learnt at a realistic pace and are not intimidated by more realistic fighting scenarios. You should not, however, be intimidated by the idea of sparring which is a game - a tool to complement your learning - not a brutal ring fight!

Hung Leng Kuen Kung Fu / Wu Shu is a Martial Art.
The dictionary definition of the word "Martial" is:
adj. of or appropriate to war; warlike

Martial Arts evolved out of martial situations - to defend people, towns and countries against invaders. As martial systems were developed, they were also perceived as artistic, and adding the Art helped the Martial aspects to be flowing and internal, benefitting health and longevity.

Any style that purely studies the health and meditation benefits of breathing and flowing movement is an Art. Any style that purely focusses on aggressive fighting is just Martial. Through focussed combination, both aspects become even more effective.

Hung Leng Kuen focusses Chi through purposeful Art by never forgetting it's Martial roots and application.
