Summary

Introduction

Hung Leng Kuen is suitable for young, mature, male, female, total beginners and those who have trained before.

Instructed by Sifu Tim Prescott, Hung Leng Kuen Kung Fu/Wu Shu is a style developed from many true origins of Kung Fu, incorporating the traditional animal-based forms, Chinese boxing, t'ai chi, chi kung and weaponry.

Through it's teachings, Hung Leng Kuen develops focus, strength, flexibility, endurance, ability, and self-confidence for practical, on-the-street self defence and for those who wish to learn a traditional martial art.

Preparation
From day one you are taught essential stretching and warm-up techniques. These keep us from harming ourselves during training and, if performed regularly, increase strength and flexibility.

Occasionally sessions emphasise exercise and fitness, creating external strength and stamina. Stamina is something that we say is not vital to defend yourself with Hung Leng Kuen. We use techniques that should end conflict as quickly as it starts - whatever your stature, but endurance helps ensure well-being and is useful for, and created by, our vital forms.

Self-defence
When conflict is unavoidable, we act - decisively.
As accomplished, confident martial artists, we have nothing to prove.

The first goal in training is to acquire a sufficient degree of skill in practical self-defence. This consists of first increasing awareness of surroundings and ways to avoid conflict.

Then - what to do if conflict is unavoidable. i.e. "What can I do if someone tries to hit me? grab me? strangle me? rape me?" etc. Also covered in the self-defence aspect are all levels of strikes, kicks, locks, throws, restraints and acquiring "Fighting Spirit".

Traditional

Forms in Hung Leng Kuen Kung Fu are fascinating, graceful, flowing inventories of our defending, attacking and counter-attacking movements. They enable us to train alone to develop power and technique from the cultivation and focus of our inner chi or "life force".

Hung Leng forms are largely based around the eight animals but also contain influences from Shaolin Long Fist, Choy Lee Fut, Pa Qua/Ba Gwa Chang, Drunken Boxing, T'ai Chi and weaponry systems.

Sparring
Hung Leng Kuen uses sparring occasionally, as a tool for learning. It may sound intimidating but it should not. Sparring will always take place in a controlled environment, fully padded and under the supervision of instructors.

You will never find yourself overwhelmed or allowed to leave the kwoon (training room) with the misapprehension that sparring is realistic. Sparring is a game and you will be told of it's benefits and, if used incorrectly, it's drawbacks.

Fighting spirit in Hung Leng Kuen is provided by the Black Leopard and is something that we look to cultivate in you. So, if you are the shy, retiring type, don't worry - we aim to bring you out of yourself!

Experienced martial artist?
Even though all students must progress through the grading system, if you have practiced a martial art before, it stands to reason that you may find this progression easier and more natural.

Do not be disheartened under the misapprehension that you will begin at the first grade - even the first forms taught in Hung Leng Kuen are advanced in their application.

We have been joined by many people from a huge variation of styles and they each agree that they have learnt something new as soon as they begin training.

Further training
Emphasis is placed on making your kung fu instinctive - the practice of partnered-up self-defence and time spent perfecting kicking, striking, trapping and grappling techniques are part of our regular schedule.

Students must take responsibility for their personal development. Attendance of all available classes is necessary to be a balanced practitioner. Attending extra-curricular seminars is advised and you can ask instructors about private tuition.

To reap the ultimate benefits from Kung Fu, and to be a true Martial Artist, a deep form of dedication is needed. However, as day-to-day living rarely allows us to study full time, most students find benefit in Hung Leng Kuen while viewing it as a "hobby".

By practicing regularly outside of the kwoon on all that you learn during lessons you will find it easier to pick up new skills, have your kung fu come more naturally and will, inevitably, advance through the grades at a steadier pace. To get an idea of what the grades consist of go to the Hung Leng Kuen Syllabus page.

Despite how busy life can be, Hung Leng Kuen students find training to be a welcome escape from life's many outside pressures once they are in the kwoon.

We regularly welcome new members, so do not feel intimidated about attending for the firt time. If you have any preliminary questions, feel free to contact us.
